In the State of California, under the Talent Agencies Act, a model who is the victim of a modeling scam does not have to file a lawsuit, but instead can file a petition to determine controversy.
The Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) has the authority and original jurisdiction by statute to make rulings or "determinations" on talent agency and talent management disputes.

There are many more cases in .pdf which can be downloaded from the DLSE website:
Several of the select cases are petitions by celebrities, such as Jewel, Pamela Anderson, Wesley Snipes, Arsenio Hall, and Richard Pryor.
Most were trying to get out of contracts and/or going after millions of dollars. In one case, the celeb won over $2,000,000 as a result of filing the petition.
