Modeling Scams

WRITE TO YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE

If it is a really big scam, write to your congressional representative. FTC Attorney Robin Spector, who has prosecuted cases of modeling fraud, was asked: "How does the FTC get involved with an investigation?" She answered:

We find targets for law enforcements through a variety of ways -- through news stories, consumer complaints, BBBs, we have referral relationships with all of them; we have existing orders that we monitor, and we watch TV and shop, so some are self-generated. Most are referrals -- consumer complaints or competitor complaints. There are also certain industries we monitor -- like dietary supplement industry, a lot of outrageous claims -"cures for cancer" type claims, so we monitor advertising in those industries. Congressmen sometimes write in on behalf of their constituents.
